Welcome To Bowie Texas! Incorporated in 1883, Bowie began with a population of 1,100 settlers and 50 local businesses. Today, its population numbers 5,400, with industries ranging from apparel and athletic goods manufacturing, to agriculture, energy, machine manufacturing, and strong retail trade. Is Bowie named for the Texas hero Jim Bowie? Probably, but a popular workman on the railroad was named 'Buie', so his name was tossed about as a choice. His name suggested the Alamo hero, and it also symbolized those early pioneers whose strong spirit helped carve out the West. That strong pioneer spirit still prevails in Bowie today! Bowie has been called "Cowboy Country", and the name fits, as its ranking in both the amateur rodeo status grows each year. During the last weekend of June, Bowie comes alive with the festivities of Jim Bowie Days Festival and Rodeo. One of the highlights is the two-day Blue Grass Round-up and Chuck Wagon Cook-off sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. The nightly Rodeo is one of the largest amateur rodeos in Texas. Daytime activities include: parades, games for young and old (such as frog jumping and turtle racing), a Rodeo Queen Contest, Indian Artifact Show, Car Show and lots of food and music.
